Catering Services
A number of catering outlets are monitored by the Centre of Development and Resources for Students (CEDARS). You may visit the website maintained by the CEDARS for the
catering outlets
on campus.
In addition to the catering outlets overseen by the CEDARS, Senior Common Room (SCR) and the dining hall of Robert Black College offer fine international and Chinese cuisine with nice views. Details can be found at the website of
SCR and
Robert Black College respectively.
A variety of restaurants offering different cuisines are also available outside the Main Campus along Bonham Road, High Street, Water Street and in Western District within walking distance. The
OpenRice.com is a popular dining guide in Hong Kong and you can easily find your desired dining places using the restaurant search engine.
Health and Wellness
The University Health Service (UHS) has an on-campus clinic providing health care services, including dental services, to eligible members of the University. You can check the medical benefits which you are entitled at your “Personnel File” located under “Self Service > Human Resource > Personnel File” after you log in your HKU Portal account, or check the webpage at
http://www.uhs.hku.hk/medical_benefits/.
The Medical Clinic and the Dental Clinic are located on the 2/F and 3/F of the Meng Wah Complex respectively. Appointments can be made by phone at 2549 4686 (6 lines) (Medical) or 2859 2510 - 12 (Dental), or via the HKU Portal (Campus Information Services > Service Departments > UHS Web Appointment Booking).
In addition to the primary care service provided by the UHS, the University provides an Outside Panel Doctors Scheme to all full-time appointees on fixed-term contracts, probationary/substantive/tenure terms of appointment and full-time appointees on temporary contracts who have been continuously employed for one year or more, and their eligible dependants. Users of this Scheme are required to contribute $50/$60 (depending on the medical network), payable at the clinics, for each medical consultation. The remaining balance of the consultation fee will be charged to the University. The outside panel does not cover Discovery Bay. Eligible staff and dependants residing in Discovery Bay will be reimbursed up to $100 for each medical consultation made at the registered medical clinics in Discovery Bay.
With an aim to cover most of the shortfall between the benefits entitlement under the University’s Staff Medical Benefits Scheme and the actual costs of hospitalization, staff members who are eligible for either first class or second class hospitalization and who are under the age of 65 can join the Staff Contributory Top-up Medical Insurance Plan.
Details are available in the Letter of Appointment to eligible staff members. Further information can be obtained at the
UHS website.
For urgent medical attention, please go straight to the Accident & Emergency Department of any major hospitals of Hong Kong. The University will reimburse $100 per visit to the Accident & Emergency Departments in any Hospital Authority hospitals for all eligible users. All regional hospitals offer 24-hour emergency service for the acute illnesses or injuries. The nearest hospital to the University with Accident & Emergency Department is Queen Mary Hospital located at 102 Pok Fu Lam Road. For ambulance service, please dial 999 or 2735 3355
Support to Families
Tea gathering
Tea gathering for new colleagues and families will be organized in August/September each year. The informal occasion is to gather new professoriate colleagues and their families who are new to Hong Kong so that they can meet and mingle with each other. HKU colleagues who have been around for longer time are also invited to offer practical tips and insights into day-to-day living in Hong Kong.
