Research Assistant Professorships
and Post-doctoral Fellowships

Applications are invited for a number of positions as Research Assistant Professor (RAP) (Ref.: RF-98/99-138) and Post-doctoral Fellow (PDF) (Ref.: RF-98/99-139), tenable preferably from 1 September 1999 or at a later date to be agreed. Appointments will be made on a 2-3 year fixed-term contracts.

RAP and PDF are relatively new posts created by the University with the aim of injecting fresh impetus and vigour to the University's research enterprise, in order to complement and broaden its existing research expertise. Appointees are expected to bring in new research ideas and cutting-edge technologies.

Research Assistant Professors

The main focus of an RAP's duty is research. They can however be assigned teaching duties, up to 50% of the normal teaching load. Applicants should be research active with a proven publication record. Appointments will be made usually on the first point of the 4-point salary scale HK$43,060, $46,190, $49,280 and $52,405 per month (approx. GBP3,440, 3,700, 3,940 and 4,190; sterling equivalent as at April 22, 1999). A (taxable) financial subsidy towards rented accommodation, leave, medical and dental benefits, and an allowance for children's education in Hong Kong will be offered.

Postdoctoral Fellows

PDFs are expected to focus on research. Applicants should be PhD degree holders. Appointments will be made usually on the first point of the 4-point salary scale HK$30,785, $33,705, $36,940 and $40,500 per month (approx. GBP2,460, 2,700, 2,960 and 3,240; sterling equivalent as at April 22, 1999). Annual leave, medical and dental benefits will be provided.

RAPs and PDFs are tenable in any academic discipline that is represented within the University's nine faculties - Architecture, Arts, Dentistry, Education, Engineering, Law, Medicine, Science, and Social Sciences - or its School of Business, or other centres, institutes and units. Interested candidates are advised to contact, in the first instance, and prior to making an application, the Head of the appropriate department or academic unit to confirm availability of posts, to obtain information about current research initiatives and activities, and to discuss informally the prospect of an appointment being made.

Applicants must submit a completed University application form, which should clearly state which position they are applying for; and in which academic discipline. Applicants who are applying for both positions should fill in two sets of application forms. They should also provide further information such as details of their research experience, publications, research proposals etc.
